Descry is a short objective based horror experience.

You have been sent to an isolated island to discover the fate of the researchers that have gone missing there and recover their data. Unfortunately, you are not alone.

Run and loot

Something is out there... and it's coming for you. Descry is not littered with jumpscares. Instead you will be seen and you will be chased. There is no second chances if you are caught. I find the best horror is when something is out there and even if it sees you, it doesn't mean that you can see it.

Loot to survive

You can't fight. Instead you should run. In Descry, find crates and drawers to find items that may help you escape the entity hunting you. Please be aware that this is a very early in development build of the game and so there's not a ton of loot available.

Controls

Controls are all available to view in game at any time under Help & Guides. However, here are some of the basic controls:

WASD to Move & Mouse to Look

Q to look behind you

LMB to use held item

E to interact

Left Shift to sprint

Left Control to crouch

Spacebar to jump

Got stuck? Objectives are always visible on the map [M].

More information

  • This game is early development. Don't be surprised to find bugs!
  • Build is only for Windows right now - no build dedicated available for Mac/Linux.
  • Descry was build in Unity using the High Definition Render Pipeline.

In January 2021, I made a short horror game with a friend called Wendigo. It was made for a game jam over the course of a week, and boy does it show. Now, almost 2 years later I thought I'd challenge myself to recreate that same game but better.

Over the course of a week I had off from my day job, I built the majority of Descry. Only a few extra days were needed for UI and the build. I think Descry has potential considering it was put together in less than a fortnight. While this current version of Descry is built as a homage to a previous project, the future is likely to look very different.

The future of Descry is likely to take a horror, rogue-like approach. I'm excited to share more but it's one that's going to be a bigger project, with this version of the game as a base.

I've really enjoyed working on Descry and look forward to a more fleshed out release in the future. Thanks for playing.

The game ran quite smoothly for me (rtx 3070), I have a widescreen, so some UI elements were a bit off but I didn't encounter any game breaking bugs.

I quite like the idea that you depart on the island and you're free to roam, it's almost like an open-world game. At the same time the map and objectives in the map make it quite interesting. You don't usually see maps being involved in these kind of games but I think the introduction here didn't make the game any less scary or interesting to explore.

One thing I noticed is that the creature that haunts and chases you didn't appear in 2 playthroughs I had, but it did appear on my 3rd one. Not sure why it wasn't appearing but when it did, it was very scary. I was playing during the day and without headphones but it was very intense.

I can see a lot of potential! Thank you!

Thanks for playing! and for the comment  I'll take a look at fixing the UI scaling.

The creature has a vision radius and stalks the map so I imagine it could have been a case of the creature accidentally avoiding you.

I might look at a quick patch to increase the creature's search radius in the next couple of days to improve that experience. Glad the scare factor worked when you did have an encounter though.

Thanks for the words of encouragement!

version rar?

I just shit myself this game is so scary. Love the atmosphere and stroytelling, the hunt was super scary and fun. Performance was fine for me. Gotta clean my pants, thanks.

The game looks fantastic and the gameplay is good too, but the FPS often went down and my RTX 3060 ran at 99 percent at some points, but otherwise great, keep developing games

Oof that sounds like bad optimization! Top of the list for fixes I reckon! Thanks for playing, glad you enjoyed.
